Mexican Nationals Apprehended in Colorado with 180,000 Rounds of Ammunition

Two Mexican nationals were apprehended in Colorado last month for transporting a staggering 180,000 rounds of ammunition during a routine traffic stop, federal officials revealed.

Caesar Ramon Martinez Solis, 41, and Humberto Ivan Amador Gavira, 24, were stopped by detectives from Fremont County on March 26th in Cañon City for various traffic violations, including failure to dim headlights and a broken license plate light, as per the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Colorado.

Upon searching their white Chevrolet van, authorities discovered approximately 150 boxes of .308 ammunition and 30 boxes of 7.62 ammunition, each containing 1,000 rounds.

Martinez Solis, who waived his right to an attorney, cooperated with Homeland Security agents, disclosing that he and Amador Gavira, his brother-in-law, had traveled from Mexico to Denver to inspect a vehicle the day before. They later stopped at a gun shop in Salt Lake City, where Amador Gavira purchased the ammunition.

The affidavit mentioned that Martinez Solis was unsure of the ammunition’s intended use but believed it was headed for Pueblo, with the exact location saved on Amador Gavira’s phone.

Both individuals have been charged with unlawfully possessing ammunition as nonimmigrant visa holders.

The investigation is being conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, as part of Operation Take Back America targeting illegal immigration and transnational crime, particularly drug cartels.

The Trump administration’s firm stance on combating Mexican drug cartels and illegal immigration, as well as its designation of the cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, underscores the severity of the situation.

The arrests are a significant development in the ongoing efforts to secure the border and combat criminal activities stemming from illegal immigration.
